To enhance safety for workers and the general public, the provincial government of BC has made several amendments to the Safety Standards Act which came into force at midnight, November 30. These amendments are intended to address gaps and strengthen existing safety oversight tools so that delegated authorities administering the Act, including Technical Safety BC and other local municipalities, can do their jobs more effectively.

Technical Safety BC today announced the recipients of its 2018 Lieutenant Governor Safety Awards, recognizing individuals and organizations who demonstrate exceptional leadership, achievement or innovation in technical safety in British Columbia.

You can’t see it. You can’t smell it. You’ve probably never thought about it. But make no mistake: it’s out there. And it could kill you. We’re talking about carbon monoxide (CO), an invisible, odourless, tasteless gas produced when wood, natural gas, or anything organic burns incompletely.

On August 2, 2018, Ministerial Order M317, which amends the Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation, the Electrical Safety Regulation, the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation, the Gas Safety Regulation, and the Safety Standards General Regulation, was signed and deposited.

Technical Safety BC today released its Investigation Report into the ammonia release at Fernie Memorial Arena on October 17, 2017, which tragically resulted in three fatalities, as well as the evacuation of 95 residents from 55 nearby homes.

Technical Safety BC is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Lieutenant Governor Safety Awards. The awards recognize individuals and organizations who demonstrate exceptional leadership, achievement or innovation in technical safety in British Columbia.

Technical Safety BC has released its State of Safety 2017 Report. The interactive, online document provides an overview of incidents and injuries related to technical equipment observed over the previous year, and the organization’s efforts to understand and manage safety risk.
