Pressure welders in British Columbia are now required to hold a certificate of qualification.

Working with industry, we have designed a nationally recognized pressure welder certificate of qualification program that assesses a welder’s skills and abilities. This program, which has also replaced the BCP-100, ensures all pressure welders in BC have the capabilities that are required by the relevant codes and standards.

Are you currently working as a pressure welder in BC?

If you are currently working as a pressure welder in BC or hold a current BCP-100 certificate, and meet the certification requirements, you can transition to a class A certificate without fees before December 3, 2020. The class A certificate of qualification allows you to perform pressure welding while employed by a licensed contractor in the province of BC. This certificate must be renewed every three years before your birth month.

If you do not apply before December 3, 2020, you will need to apply for a class A certificate as a new pressure welder in BC, which costs $389. This fee does not include the recognized test administrator practical exam fee.
 

Are you a pressure welder from outside of BC?

You can do two things:

  1. Gain a class R certificate of qualification, which means you can perform a limited scope of pressure welding on specific equipment or site(s) for a time period up to six months; or
  2. Gain a class A certificate of qualification, which allows you to perform pressure welding while employed by a licensed contractor in the province of BC. This certificate must be renewed every three years before your birth month.

Apply for a class R or A pressure welder certificate of qualification.

A class R certificate of qualification fee is $104 and a class A pressure welder from outside of BC certification fee is $250. The class R fee does not include the recognized test administrator practical exam fee. Read the syllabus for the class R certification exam.
 

Industry Training Authority (ITA) Welder Graduate?

New pressure welders, such as those graduating from the ITA welder program, will need to apply for a class A certificate of qualification in order to work as a pressure welder in BC. The class A certificate of qualification allows you to perform pressure welding while employed by a licensed contractor in the province of BC. This certificate must be renewed every three years before your birth month.

Apply for a class A pressure welder certificate of qualification.

An ITA welder graduate applying for a class A certificate is $389. This fee does not include the recognized test administrator practical exam fee. Read the syllabus for the class A certification exam.
 

Pressure welder in training?


New pressure welders, such as those in the Industry Training Authority welder program, will need to apply for a class IT certificate of qualification in order to apprentice as a pressure welder in BC. A class IT certificate of qualification allows you to perform pressure welding as an apprentice under the supervision of a class A pressure welder. This certificate is non-renewable and expires after three years.
