Safety Compliance and Enforcement

Technical Safety BC administers the Safety Standards Act that applies in most jurisdictions throughout British Columbia. 

Technical Safety BC cares about compliance and enforcement because it supports the Safety System. Compliance and enforcement is critical for ensuring that non-compliances and hazardous conditions are rectified and that no one contractor has an economic advantage over another.

So, if you are installing, operating, manufacturing, altering, maintaining, or selling equipment in any of the technologies we regulate — and fail to adhere to the Safety Standards Act — and associated regulations Technical Safety BC may take compliance and enforcement action against you or your organization.

Does this apply to me? 

Technical Safety BC may take action when compliance with the Safety Standards Act is not met. This includes:

• When individuals have chosen to operate outside of the safety system;
• When individuals have resisted attempts to make their work or equipment compliant.

What happens if I am non-compliant? 

Being non-compliant with critical safety elements of the technical safety system may result in Technical Safety BC taking action.

Technical Safety BC has a range of actions that are part of the enforcement process which include warning notices, monetary penalties, and even suspension of contractor licenses or individual qualifications.

How can I become compliant?

We know that sometimes permits can be overlooked or that projects can change in scope or value. Our Voluntary Disclosure Program (VDP) enables contractors to assess their own compliance and comply with the regulations without incurring penalties that would have resulted had they not stepped forward. As well, participation in the program keeps the contractors enforcement history off of the public registry, which helps preserve their reputation.
